    About Cordierite

Cordierite, better known by its gem name iolite, is like a slice of twilight crystallised. Its pleochroic nature means that it displays different colours (violet, blue and honey-yellow) depending on the angle of light, making it a natural polarising filter. Legend has it that Vikings used thin slices of iolite to navigate by the sun on cloudy days, hence its nickname "Viking’s compass." Cordierite forms in metamorphic rocks when magnesium-rich sediments are transformed by heat and pressure, producing crystals that look like calm seas one moment and storm clouds the next. It reminds you to trust your inner compass and to navigate change with grace.

Cordierite has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5:contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}, similar to quartz, but its cleavage planes reduce its toughness.

Handling: Although scratch-resistant, cordierite can break along cleavage planes when struck. Handle with care, avoid pressure and protect from sudden impacts.

    Origins

    • Brazil
    • India
    • Sri Lanka

    How to Use

Cordierite is hard but brittle along its cleavage. Gentle handling and moderate light exposure will keep its colours vibrant.

    • Avoid sharp blows or bending which can cause cleavage fractures
    • Do not expose to harsh chemicals or acids that could dull the surface
    • Limit prolonged sunlight to prevent potential fading
    • Safe for brief water rinses; dry immediately afterwards

    Care & Cleansing

    Brief Water

    Recommended

    Sage/Palo Santo SmokePreferred

    Cleanses energy without physical stress

    Sound CleansingPreferred

Vibration clears and balances without contact

    Running Water

Brief rinsing removes physical dust; dry promptly

    MoonlightPreferred

Lunar energy recharges its intuitive qualities without heat

    Sunlight

Short exposure can energise but long exposure may fade colour

    Avoid

    Salt/Chemical Baths

Salt and chemicals can pit or dull cordierite and may weaken cleavage planes

    Storage

Store cordierite wrapped in soft cloth away from heavier objects. Protect it from impact and extreme heat.

    Safety

    Cleavage Fracture

    high

Strikes or pressure along cleavage planes can cause splitting. Handle gently and avoid bending.

    Sunlight Sensitivity

    low

Prolonged direct sunlight may lighten the stone’s colour. Store in shaded locations.

Cordierite is safe for external use but should not be ingested or used to make elixirs. Its distinct cleavage requires careful handling.
