Layered light of reflection and clarity
Layered light of reflection and clarity
About Mica
Mica looks like pages torn from a book of light. Its silicate layers form shimmering sheets that peel like the pages of an ancient manuscript. Each wafer glints with a metallic sheen ranging from silvery muscovite to dark biotite, the result of tiny particles of aluminum and magnesium that cooled in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Holding a flake feels like holding a dragonfly’s wing or the scales of a butterfly; it invites you to reflect on what lies between the layers of your own story and see through the veils of illusion.
Metaphysical Properties
Mohs Hardness
With a Mohs hardness around 2.5, mica is very soft and easily scratched. Its layered structure cleaves into thin sheets with little effort.
Handling: Handle mica gently and avoid dropping or bending it. Do not expose it to water, soaps or chemicals because moisture can weaken the layers. Store pieces flat in a padded box away from harder stones to prevent scratching and keep them dry.
Origins
- India
- USA
- Russia
How to Use
These guidelines protect mica from moisture, abrasion and impact. Its low hardness and perfect cleavage make it vulnerable to scratches and flaking, so it must be cleaned dry and stored carefully. Energetic cleansing should avoid water to prevent damage.
- Do not immerse mica in water or expose it to salt, detergents or chemical cleaners because moisture dissolves the bonds between its layers.
- Clean mica only with a dry, soft cloth; avoid brushes or abrasive materials that can scratch or break its thin sheets.
- Store mica flat in a dry, padded pouch or box away from humidity and temperature extremes to prevent warping or peeling.
- Avoid dropping or bending mica because it cleaves easily along its layers.
- Use smoke or sound for energetic cleansing and recharge under gentle moonlight; avoid sunlight which may bleach its color.
Care & Cleansing
No WaterRecommended
Smoke clears stagnant energy without physical contact or moisture
Sound vibrations cleanse energy gently and do not damage the stone
Moonlight recharges mica without heat or moisture
Placing mica on a cleansing stone like selenite clears residual energy without touching or scratching it
Avoid
Mica’s layered structure absorbs water and will flake apart or lose luster when wet
Salt is abrasive and moisture can dissolve the bonds between layers
Extended sunlight can fade mica’s color and dry its layers
Storage
Keep mica flat in a dry, cushioned box or pouch. Avoid humid rooms and store it separately from harder stones to prevent scratches. Do not bend or stack heavy objects on top of mica specimens.
Safety
Dust inhalation
criticalCutting or sanding mica produces fine dust that can cause lung scarring and respiratory problems when inhaled over long periods:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}. Wear a mask and work in a ventilated area when shaping or grinding mica.
Not edible
highMica contains aluminum and other elements not meant for ingestion. Do not use it in elixirs or as an additive in food or drinks.
Skin irritation
lowTiny splinters of mica can cause minor skin irritation. Handle raw pieces carefully and wash hands after use.
Environmental dust
lowFine mica dust can linger in the air and settle on surfaces. Clean your workspace after handling to prevent inhalation or contamination.
Mica is for external use only; do not ingest or inhale its dust.
