Ametrine is a natural bicolor quartz where amethyst's purple meets citrine's gold inside a single stone. Almost every commercial ametrine comes from the Anahi Mine in Bolivia, where iron in the original quartz oxidized to different states as the crystal cooled, producing two color zones along the same axis. The mine sits in Bolivia's eastern Pantanal region, far from the famous Andes mineral belt. Spanish records trace the deposit to a 1600s conquistador who received the mine through marriage to a princess named Anahi. The two color zones run along the crystal's c-axis because amethyst and citrine form at slightly different temperatures during a single growth phase. The mine was lost for centuries and rediscovered in the 1970s, and most faceted ametrine on the global gem market still traces back to this one deposit.
