About Black Tourmaline
Black tourmaline, known as schorl, grows like dark lightning frozen into crystal form. Deep underground, boron‑rich fluids cooled and crystallized into long, striated columns that conduct energy like tiny wires. Ancient magicians and warriors carried it as a shield, believing its glossy surface would absorb curses and return them to the earth. This stone hums with electricity (squeeze it or heat it and it will generate a small charge), reminding us that pressure and heat can be transformed into power rather than destruction. When you hold black tourmaline you feel the pulse of the planet itself, a steady grounding current that roots you to the core while storms rage overhead.
Mohs Hardness
Black tourmaline scores 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, giving it substantial resistance to scratching while remaining brittle along its striations.
Handling: The striated crystals can fracture if struck along their length. Store separately from heavier stones and avoid dropping or applying pressure.

How to Use
Black tourmaline is durable but can fracture along its natural striations. Keep away from harsh chemicals and high heat.
- Avoid extreme heat which may alter its crystalline structure
- Do not subject to acids or harsh chemicals
- Handle long crystals gently to prevent breaking along striations
- Suitable for brief water cleansing but dry completely afterwards
Care & Cleansing
Brief WaterRecommended
Water removes absorbed negativity and is safe for tourmaline
Salt draws out heavy energy but should be brushed off thoroughly
Recharges the stone by reconnecting it with the ground
Gentle recharge that enhances its protective qualities
Avoid
Chemicals can dull or pit the surface of tourmaline
Storage
Store black tourmaline in a padded container separate from harder minerals. Protect its striations from impact and avoid placing heavy objects on top of it.
Safety
Striation Fracture
mediumLong crystals can snap along natural striations if dropped or bent. Handle with care, especially when wire wrapping or setting in jewelry.
Acid Damage
lowHarsh acids and cleaners may react with the mineral surface. Clean with gentle soap and water only.
Black tourmaline is stable and safe for external use, but internal use is not advised. Always handle long crystals carefully to avoid breakage.
